Recent security incidents in our neighborhood reported to our security coordinator:

  • October 12 or 13, 2009. A mailbox was vandalized and a security sign stolen from a N. Albemarle Street residence sometime late on October 12th or early in the morning of the 13th.
  • March 10, 2009. 8:10pm - Laburnum Street a girl saw a suspicious person trying to open sliding glass door from deck in back yard. Door was locked and intruder could not get in. Girl immediately told parents and they called police. Damage done to gate on fence in back yard. Description of person: white male with long, dark-colored, wavy hair, tall with thin build and wearing glasses. There was a helicopter in the area trying to help with the search.
  • March 6, 2009. Report from El Nido Citizen's Association (East & Valley Avenue which intersect with Old Chesterbrook Rd). In early morning hours resident attacked by three young black men. Victim had pockets searched and was kicked in back and will need surgery. Police notified and investigating.
  • Feb 24, 2009. 9:50 pm: A male seen trespassing and peering into ground floor bathroom window while resident showering. Homeowner chased the suspect, who ran between two houses near woods between Copely Lane and Maddux Lane. Police responded and police report was filed. Please be vigilant, keep doors locked, turn on outside lights at night and report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
  • July 29, 2008. Several locked cars broken into along Brookside Drive during evening hours and items stolen. Police report filed. Be sure to lock cars, leave items in cars out of sight, and lock your homes. Let neighbors know when you're away and report any suspicious activity, no matter how trivial.
  • January 30, 2008. Multiple Vehicle Break-Ins – Between the hours of 1:30 - 5:30 a.m. Eight reports of vehicles broken into at or around Forest Lane and Oakdale Road, some with items stolen. Additionally, a stolen car from Arlington was left in that location on the same night. Please lock all your vehicle doors and do not leave valuables inside the car (or remove them from plain view). Always report such incidences to the police to assist them in establishing trends and patterns of criminal behavior. Police have been asked to increase patrols in our neighborhood. Also, if you see someone breaking into a vehicle, please do not confront them. Go into your house and call 911. Please contact John Glowacki re: any further break-ins or with questions. John: 571.259.5109
  • First week of Jan and February 5, 2008. Two Christmas Tree Arsons – (1) On Woodacre Drive at Laburnum; (2) Close to the intersection of Calla Drive and Dahlia Ct. Had it not been for a quick-thinking neighbor, the residents in the adjacent home would have been imperiled. If anyone has any information, they should contact the Fairfax County Police at 703.556.7750.
  • September 2007. Rabid fox entered fenced backyard on Hardwood Lane and was caught and put down by Fairfax County. For animal violations, contact the County’s Animal Control at 703.691.2131. Remember to keep your pets’ rabies vaccinations up to date.
  • Summer 2007. Recent reports of mailbox damage, offensive items inside mailboxes and fundraising letters with obscenities on Forest Lane and Highwood Drive. As tampering with mail is a federal offense, residents should report incidents to the Police and U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
  • July 2007. A visiting child was lost in Chain Bridge Forest end of Highwood Drive. Police responded within minutes and child was found in an hour. Lock all doors, especially garage & cars in the driveway. Keep your eyes open and report suspicious vehicles and behavior. Put in security systems & motion/sensor lights. This is the third break-in and burglary this year in Chesterbrook Woods. Fortunately, no one has been hurt.

We want to increase the frequency of our security patrols during periods when children are out playing, but we need more volunteers for patrol duty. Please contact Virginia Dillon at 536 8729 or Ione Braswell at 536 1681 if you can drive on patrol for two hours a few times a year.

Also of interest: There have been many sightings of young and old foxes in yards and sauntering down the street unafraid. Don't go near them, or near raccoons, or possums, either, for when they're so easily spotted, they're sometimes rabid.

Don't hesitate to report anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. Remember: If you are suspicious of a person that you see in the neighborhood or should you see or experience a criminal act, call the police at once. 911 should be used for police assistance during the commission of an act or an emergency, and (703) 691-2131 should be used to report suspicious activity, or to report crimes after they have occurred. Then report the events to Cabell Fooshe >, our Security Director, at 703-850-6039.

Officer Patrick Lucas is the Crime Prevention coordinator at the McLean District station. His e-mail is patrick.lucas@fairfaxcounty.gov . His phone is 703-734-0756. He's very responsive.
